Writing Prompt: In the space below, write about a major holiday, what you know about it, and what typically happens on this day.

Writing prompts may instruct you to write about fiction or nonfiction. If the prompt does not specify, feel free to make up a story or draw from personal experience. In this prompt, please write about a real holiday.


Before you begin writing, you’ll need to brainstorm ideas for your story. Think: What holiday do you want to write about? What does this holiday celebrate? Who celebrates this holiday? How is this holiday celebrated? There are many different answers to each of these questions, so your story should be unique.


Take a look at the two sample answers provided in response to the given writing prompt. Sample answer number one is about Independence Day, a holiday in the United States where people celebrate the country’s independence. People often celebrate with patriotic displays such as fireworks.


In sample answer number two, the author wrote about New Years. New Years is celebrated in many countries over a two-day period. New Year’s Eve begins the last night of the year. People celebrate with parties into New Year’s Day, the first day of the new year.

Sample Answer #1

Independence Day is a national holiday celebrated in the United States of America. This day marks the day when the United States declared its independency through a document known as the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence went into effect on July 4th, 1776. Now, every year, on the fourth of July, people celebrate this great event and the country’s independence.


To celebrate Independence Day, people put on patriotic displays such as fireworks. At night, many places will put on a large display of fireworks for people to come, watch, and celebrate. People also may have the option to buy their own fireworks to put on their own display. Often times, people will spend the day outside with family, friends, and neighbors and host barbeques or picnics. Patriotic parades can also be seen on this day.

The colors of Independence Day are red, white, and blue which represent the colors of the American flag. Many people can be seen wearing these colors on the fourth of July in recognition of the Independence Day holiday.

New Years is an international holiday celebrated by many countries around the world. It is a two-day event, starting on the very last day of the year, December 31st. This day is called New Year’s Eve. People celebrate this holiday through the next day, the first day of the new year, or New Year’s Day. This day is the first of January.


People around the world and in different countries celebrate this holiday in different ways. For example, in the United States of America, a famous celebration event is the ball drop in New York City that takes place at midnight on New Years. Other countries, such as in Europe, celebrate with fireworks or music.


New Years is a holiday to mark the start of a new year. Many people make goals for this new year. Also, many people celebrate this holiday in social groups with friends and family and will countdown the minutes or seconds until midnight. This holiday takes place every year around the world.
