‘Division of Decimals – by multiples of 10’
Division of decimals by multiples of 10 is simple if you follow some simple rules.
We can do this mentally!
Example: Divide!
1) 23.574 ÷ 10 = 2.3574
Since 10 has 1 zero, move the decimal point by one place to the left in the decimal number i.e. the decimal point will now be after 2. So the required answer will be 2.3574.
2) 23.574 ÷ 100 = 2357.400
Since 100 has 2 zeros, move the decimal point by two places to the left in the decimal number i.e. the decimal point will now be before 2. We’ll add a zero before 2. The required answer will be 0.23574.
Remember the rule: ‘Move the decimal point to the left in the decimal number according to the number of zeros in the other number.’
