‘Multiplication of Decimals – Using multiplication facts’
Multiplication of decimals is simple if you carefully align the decimal point.
We follow a pattern when we are multiplying any decimal number by 10, 100 0r 1000. We can do this mentally!
Example: Multiply!
1) 23.574 × 10 = 235.740
Since 10 has 1 zero, add one zero in the decimal number i.e. 23.5740.
Now move the decimal point by one place to the right in the decimal number i.e. the decimal point will now be after 5. So the required answer will be 235.740.
2) 23.574 × 100 = 2357.400
Since 100 has 2 zeros, add two zeros in the decimal number i.e. 23.57400.
Now move the decimal point by two places to the right in the decimal number i.e. the decimal point will now be after 7. So the required answer will be 2357.400.
Remember the rule: ‘Move the decimal point to the right in the decimal number according to the number of zeros in the other number.’ below.
