Adverbs

An adverb is a phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or word group or other adverb. The adverb expresses a relation of time, place, manner, cause, circumstance, degree, and others. This means they describe when, where, or how in most cases. Many adverbs end with –ly (kindly, firmly, quickly, lightly) but others simply modify (here, often, very). If you are unsure which word in a sentence is an adverb it is more than likely the one that ends in –ly.

Sample: Play nicely with your cousins. Or The kitten was sat down gently on the blanket.

Degrees of Adverbs

An adverb of degree tells the reader about the intensity of something. These are usually placed right before the adjective, adverb, or verb that is modified. Common adverbs of degree are extremely, quite, just, almost, very, too, and enough.

Sample: The water was extremely hot. Or She was just leaving the room.

Using adverbs helps to create better sentences with more meaning for the reader.
