“Adverbial Phrases” Printable Worksheets
These Grade 4 English resources and worksheets have answers also given in the downloadable links below.
Adverbs
An adverb is a phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or word group or other adverb. The adverb expresses a relation of time, place, manner, cause, circumstance, degree, and others. This means they describe when, where, or how in most cases. Many adverbs end with –ly (kindly, firmly, quickly, lightly) but others simply modify (here, often, very). If you are unsure which word in a sentence is an adverb it is more than likely the one that ends in –ly.
Sample: Play nicely with your cousins. Or The kitten was sat down gently on the blanket.
Adverbial Phrases
Adverbial phrases are prepositional phrases that modify adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. These phrases answer the questions of how, when, where, and why. How means how long or to what degree.
Samples: Adverbial phrases may include ‘with great regret’ ‘at the corner’ ‘to understand better’ and ‘never at midnight’.
To find the adverbial phrase find the phrase that offers specific information and creates a better sentence, then see if it answers how, when, where, or why.
